Webinar Title: I...We...US: Inclusion, belonging and the importance of being heard in Healthcare

Abstract

Nursing and healthcare in the 21st century is charged with delivering high quality care within an increasingly diverse society. In pursuit of this, nursing often focuses almost exclusively on meeting the needs of patients, service users and the public. However, recent nursing shortages have resulted in increased worldwide mobility of professionals.  This brings positive advantages to receiving and migrant families and communities, however, reports often fail to recognise the challenges to both of adjusting to this movement - or the direct links between the diversity of professions and the improving life chances of patients and those receiving care - in this regard we do our communities, and our nursing workforce a dis-service. Furthermore, in the silent spaces between patient needs and nursing responsibilities, lies the unheard stories and emotional labour of qualified and undergraduate nurses from Black and Minority ethnic communities. Diversity underpins an invaluable legacy in human history and is a catalyst for delivering the high quality, equitable and culturally competent care that we all hope for.

In this presentation Professor Laura Serrant OBE shares her personal and professional reflections to highlight the importance of creating and sustaining the diversity of our workforce alongside culturally competent and compassionate leadership for truly achieving safety and quality in 21st century health care. She explores the challenges and opportunities faced at an individual and professional level as a Black academic and Nurse, looking back at some of the Global health and nursing strategic drivers of the last few years and makes a case for centralising inclusive practice and spaces to harness the power in the voices of the silenced for the future sustainability of our professions.
