As a multidisciplinary School, the following postgraduate programmes are available:
MA Writing & Communication in Irish
(Graduate Diploma option available)
This MA programme is aimed at students with an academic background in Modern Irish or a cognate subject and at Irish language and Media professionals. Our aim is to promote and preserve the Irish language, its literature and culture, and to emphasise their importance for Irish society, especially in the context of the Irish language as a working language in the European Parliament and the Official Languages Act. Central to the programme is the specific focus on contemporary research and on advanced language and professional skills such as translation, legal translation, media, editing and writing skills. Students will graduate with an in-depth knowledge in these areas, developing effective communication and analytical skills to prepare them for a variety of career paths including: careers in education, media, translation, public service, research, editing and publishing.
MA in Modern Irish
(Graduate Diploma option available)
This MA programme is aimed at graduates of Modern Irish and graduates of cognate disciplines. Our aim is to promote and preserve the Irish language, literature and culture, and emphasise their importance for Irish society and European identity. Students will develop advanced linguistic skills in Irish and deepen their knowledge of Irish-language literature, culture and history.
MA Irish Folklore and Ethnology
(Graduate Diploma option available)
The MA in Irish Folklore and Ethnology offers modules on a wide range of topics within the subject area, including research theories, the study of oral narrative, traditional music and song, fieldwork and archival methods, social tradition, popular belief systems, material culture, and Irish and European ethnology. It also offers students a choice of modules in subjects which are related to the study of Folklore and Ethnology, such as Modern Irish, Archaeology, and Cultural Policy.
MA in Irish Studies
The MA in Irish Studies is an interdisciplinary programme aimed at graduates of areas which encompass studies in history, society, language, literature and cultural practice. The programme is aimed at national and international students with an interest in literary origins and contemporary literature and media, film and popular tradition, Irish heritage and society in a global context. The aim of this programme is to enhance understanding of literature, culture, identity and societal structures which emphasise the importance and role of the Irish people and Irish society in a national and global context.
Higher Diploma in Irish Folklore
The HDip in Irish Folklore should provide students with the requisite skills, knowledge and experience to enable them to formulate and complete their own research projects in the field of folklore studies
- Designed for students and scholars without any previous background in general folkloristics or comparative ethnology
- Training in original archival and fieldwork research and methods.
- Access to the specialist library and archive holdings of the UCD Delargy Centre for Irish Folklore and the National Folklore Collection
PhD / MLitt
Our School has a strong tradition of scholarship and research in the Irish language, Celtic Studies, Folklore & Ethnology and Irish Studies.
If you are thinking about furthering your studies with us, we invite you to view the research interests in which we can offer supervision and to come to speak to us. Both MLitt and PhD degrees involve working with an academic supervisor who will guide you throughout your research project.
