We were delighted to welcome so many attendees virtually to the Annual National Lean Healthcare Symposium in early October 2021. Hosted by the Mater Lean Academy and UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems, we welcomed a number of notable speakers and Senator Mark Daly, Chair of the Seanad Éireann.
About the event
Health system workers have shown themselves to be creative, adaptive and resilient in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. Their responses highlighted the untapped potential in the health system. How do we now ensure that this potential continues to be realised and nurtured? What lessons have been learnt that can become part of how we work in the future? How can process and quality improvement methodologies help to sustain and develop adaptive capacity?
Keynote Speakers
- Mark Graban: Internationally-recognized consultant, published author, and professional speaker, experienced in working with employees in multiple industries to synthesize and practice methods including Lean management, continuous improvement, statistical methods, and people-centered leadership approaches. He is the author of the book Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement and co-authored Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Continuous Improvements. Both of those books have received the Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award.
- Elaine Mead: Formerly the Chief Executive of NHS Highlands for eight years. She is a member of the Leadership Faculty for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) teaching and supporting quality improvement, safety and leadership within Trusts in the UK. Elaine is also Chair of the Greener Health Special Interest Group for the Institute of Health and Social Care Management and Chair of the Ireland East Hospital Group.
- Dr Joy Furnival: A GenerationQ Fellow and Improvement Science PhD, the improvement team lead at the North West Ambulance Service, leading programmes of work designed to improve organisational performance whilst developing organisational capability to improve. Joy has worked as an academic teaching on the NHS Leadership Academy ‘Anderson Programme’ (MSc Healthcare Leadership) and the National School programmes for higher clinical scientists, and Joy continues to support theses programmes and some healthcare improvement research in an honorary capacity.
- Dr Deborah Baldie: The Lead Nurse for Research and Practice Development in NHS Grampian, Scotland with organisational responsibility for building capacity for practice development and research, implementing effective patient feedback systems, improving care experiences and improving person-centred nursing and midwifery leadership. She is also a NRS post-doctoral research fellow , working with Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh.
