A Lasting Legacy: New Documentary Celebrates "The Doc" Dr. Tony O’Neill

Dr. Tony O'Neill

The success of Sport in UCD in terms of the number of participants, the range of activities, and competitive achievement as we know it, is due to many people, but the person who laid the foundations for this success is the late Dr. Tony O’Neill.

Known simply as “The Doc”, Tony was the first Director of Sport in UCD. Before taking up his appointment in 1991, he was General Secretary of the Football Association of Ireland and was a highly respected UEFA official.  Although soccer was his first love, he had a deep passion for all sports and ensured that all student sporting interests and abilities were catered for at UCD.

The Doc’s premature death in 1999 was not just a loss to UCD sport, but to national and international sport.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Doc's passing in 2024, a documentary was commissioned and produced. Extracts from the documentary were proudly showcased earlier this year at the (opens in a new window)UCD FC Business Lunch and the UCD Athletic Union Council Sports Awards. We are delighted to share that the full documentary is now available to view.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in particular Emma Jane Dunne who produced and directed, (opens in a new window)Matthew Rose-Nel who filmed and edited, the O'Neill family, UCD FC, UCD Athletic Union Council, and UCD Sport for supporting this very fitting tribute to an extraordinary man.
