ARCH41000 World Heritage Conservation

This module will cover the origin and development of the World Heritage Convention using case studies of selected World Heritage Sites. It will deal with how the World Heritage Convention operates, from the nomination process and associated Global Strategy for a Representative, Balanced and Credible World Heritage List to monitoring and periodic reporting and the role of the List of World Heritage in Danger. It will also discuss state of conservation and issues such as tourism, resource use, overexploitation and natural disasters.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the World Heritage Convention and its governance.
2. Understand and communicate the processes and concepts related to nominating and monitoring a World Heritage Site.
3. Identify the necessary elements of Outstanding Universal Value for World Heritage properties.
4. Discuss the role of the State Parties, Advisory Bodies and the World Heritage Centre in assessing and monitoring World Heritage properties;
5. Critically assess external factors affecting management and conservation of World Heritage properties.
