BMGT45010 Research Methods for Engineers

Academic Year 2018/2019

This module develops the skills required by students to carry out a rigorous and engaging research project for their ME thesis. These include the ability to reviw academic litearture, to critically assess and synthesise current thinking areas of interest, and to develop a feasible research project proposal. Research topics are typically business challenges faced by technology-based organisations. The module is delivered through virtual classroom sessions and workshops, along with research assignments which students carry out in parallel with the work placement.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course students will be able to:
Define an objective for their thesis, with a clearly defined and well devloped set of research questions;
Develop a theoretical framework for their research;
Write a critical literature review of an engineering related business topic, which presents a convincing justification of the research questions;
Use a refencing system with consistency and accuracy;
Make methodological judgements on how to effectively address the research questions;
Understand the practical and ethical challenges of collecting and analysing data in a business context;
Present a coherent and achievable research proposal that meets the ME with Business thesis requirements.
