ECON20170 Economics Research Project 1

This module focuses on introducing single honours economics students to the kind of Research that staff in the school of economics are engaged in. Each week a staff member will present an outline of a research project that they are currently involved in. they will describe how the project arose and the process of searching for accessing suitable data, and reviewing the literature. They will outline the methodology used in the paper and how this was developed and the progress on the project to date. At the end of each session the staff member will give a short test on the students understanding of the material presented and any relevant readings which had been sent to the student in advance. This is the first in a series of three modules which will culminate in the students final year project.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module students should have developed an understanding of what is involved in developing a good research project in terms of identifying a question, sourcing appropriate data and developing an appropriate methodology. Additionally the students should have developed a good understanding of the kind of research that is being carried out by different staff members across the school. These outcomes should assist students when it comes to selecting topics and developing a methodology for their 3rd year project and improve their ability to get appropriate help from staff in doing this.
