This module introduces students to the concept of the nation and national identity in 19th and early 20th century Europe. It explores the following questions:
What factors motivated and shaped the development of nationalism in C19?
What factors motivated and shaped colonialism/ imperialism in C19?
How did European powers justify colonialism/imperialism?
How did imperialist nations present the idea of foreign colonies to their citizens?
In what ways and by what means did imperial powers represent the colonial ‘other’?
How and why did ideas of racial superiority develop and what did these ideas have to do with nationalism/colonialism?
By what means and in what ways did nations seek to develop a national self-image and how has this been maintained and shaped by means of the cultural imaginary?

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module students will be able to
- place major historical, social and cultural developments in Europe into a general historical framework
- demonstrate an understanding of some key factors in the development of cultural identities in Europe
- analyse a given document, applying concepts learned in the module
- express opinions orally and in writing of an appropriate register and style
