SOC30600 Exploring Pandemics

Academic Year 2023/2024

What are Pandemics? Why do they start? What happens during them? How do groups and societies respond? And, the question we are all asking is, When&Why do they end? This module examines these questions from the perspective of different academic disciplines.

Each week we will look at one of five pandemics – bubonic plague (the so-called 'Black Death'), cholera, the Great Flu, HIV/Aids, as well as COVID-19. You will be introduced to various concepts from the natural and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities. We will discuss similarities and differences in these forms of knowledge. The course material will be available online, and supported by online discussions and zoom ‘drop in’ sessions. If possible, we will meet for an optional face-to-face event. This means that you can work through the material at your own pace& personal situation. You can incorporate your own interests and academic discipline(s) into your assignments.
