CHEM20130 Problem Solving for Chemistry

Academic Year 2018/2019

Problem Solving for Chemistry” is a workshop module designed to enable students to tackle ‘mathematical’ problem solving relevant to their degree. It will empower the students to address any perceived difficulties they have with the ‘mathematical’ aspects of chemistry in a supportive environment. Content will be provided by Physical-, Organic-and Inorganic- Chemistry colleagues. The module is without prerequisites, and is delivered primarily through tutorials incorporating problem-solving ALE workshops/exercises.

The programme will consist of weekly workshops with compulsory initial homework on blackboard. A two hour tutorial session ending in a quiz, with follow on homework.

Topics to be covered include; calculation of moles, concentrations, masses, volumes for a range of scenarios; linear, non-linear, logarithmic and exponential functions and the physical scenarios they represent; analysis of lab data; statistics; calculating equilibria; differential calculus (applied to rate laws); integral calculus (applied to calculating work done).

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students will:
- Understand the underlying basis for physical relationships expressed as mathematical equations and the reasons for their different functional forms;
- Develop improved technical ability to manipulate relations to calculate key parameters correctly;
- Develop data handling and basic data evaluation and statistical skills;
- Improve their mathematical understanding and calculation abilities;
- Understand some simple applications of calculus in chemistry.
