Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is designed for international students who have a B1 level of English and wish to improve their English for personal and professional development. Students will improve their understanding of native speaker usage in a university setting. This is an integrated skills module which focuses on accuracy and fluency in speaking and writing and improving reading and listening skills. Students will have the opportunity to develop their oral proficiency through short presentations on detailed topics and will focus on improving fluency and accuracy in writing. Aspects of Irish life and culture will be introduced through written and spoken texts and classroom discussions. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module should be able to:
• give a short presentation on a detailed subject (spoken production)
• discuss a detailed subject in a fluent manner (spoken interaction)
• understand the main points in a range of spoken texts (listening)
• recognise significant points in complex texts (reading)
• write detailed texts on a wide range of subjects (writing)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves an interactive small group class using pair work and task-based activities. Students prepare short presentations and short writing assignments.
