Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is designed for international students who wish to develop the academic writing skills required for research and study purposes in an English-medium higher education environment. The module focuses on aspects of academic writing that are transferable across a wide range of academic disciplines and written text types and is particularly useful for graduate students. The aim is to enable students to write a variety of well-structured, fluent and accurate texts to meet a range of academic demands within a research and study context. Students will learn how to use a range of conventions and data sources to enable them to refine and develop their writing competence. They will also learn how to use self-correcting and redrafting processes to critically reflect on and improve their own academic writing. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module should be able to:

• analyse the construction of written texts produced within a research environment
• identify and account for disciplinary variations in academic writing texts
• consolidate and expand academic grammatical and lexical knowledge
• produce appropriately constructed extended written texts that draw on appropriate academic writing conventions

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
