Professor Kath Browne

UCD School of Geography

Kath Browne is a Geography Professor at University College Dublin. Her research interests lie in Social and Cultural Geographies, and particular people's spatial experiences of sexualities and genders. Prof. Browne's work has focused on the impact of legislative changes to sexual and gender equalities in the 21st Century, where she seeks to use research to make a difference to people's lives. Her current research includes Beyond Opposition, which examines how people in Ireland, the UK and Canada who are concerned about or opposed to changes in gender, sexuality and abortion law experience these debates in everyday life, and how dialogue across difference might reduce social polarisation. She also leads RESIST, an international project working with feminist and queer collectives across Europe to understand and challenge the rise of transnational anti-gender politics that threaten equality, inclusion and democratic freedoms.

Professor Aidan Regan, of the UCD School of Politics and International Relations, has made significant international contributions across a wide range of research areas, including multinational corporate tax avoidance, economic inequality, austerity, housing access, voting behaviour, industrial relations, welfare reform, and the future of capitalist democracy. He is Principal Investigator of the European Research Council Consolidator Grant Democracy Challenged, which examines how corporate tax avoidance fuels wealth inequality and undermines democratic systems, advancing new foundational research on the relationship between inequality and democracy.

Professor Ruth Boeker, of the UCD School of Philosophy, is a scholar of early modern philosophy whose research lies at the intersection of metaphysics, philosophy of mind and ethics. Her work focuses on debates about selfhood, personal identity and agency in the early modern period, and takes seriously the moral and religious dimensions of these discussions alongside metaphysical and epistemic questions. She leads BMoral: New Histories of British Moral Philosophy in the Eighteenth Century (c.1690–1800), a €2 million European Research Council–funded project that uncovers the overlooked contributions of women to eighteenth-century British moral philosophy, using a combination of computational methods and close philosophical analysis to rethink the history of the field.

Professor Kylie Jarrett

Professor Kylie Jarrett, of the UCD School of Information & Communication Studies, is a leading scholar of the political economy of the internet, with research spanning digital labour, platform work and social media since the 1990s. Her work examines how digital platforms shape livelihoods, power and inequality, including research on platform traders and online marketplaces, with a forthcoming co-authored book on Etsy. She has been awarded a prestigious €2.5 million European Research Council Advanced Grant for her project LivePlatforms (Livelihoods in the Platform Economy Ecosystem), one of only two ERC Advanced Grants awarded in Ireland this year. The project will deliver the first large-scale study of how platform-based work, from gig economy labour to content creation and online reselling, is reshaping work in Ireland.

Eoin Carolan is a Professor at UCD Sutherland School of Law where he is the Director of the Centre for Constitutional Studies. He is currently leading The Foundations Project (www.foundations.ac), a €2m ERC-funded project investigating the legal, social and constitutional foundations of democratic governance and the rule of law across six different states. While constitutional law often assumes institutional authority is accepted, the reality is more complex. The project explores the gap between legal norms and social facts, using six case studies to examine how institutional authority is established, maintained, or fails and the constitutional consequences. It also develops a new model and evaluation framework for understanding the separation of powers.

Assoc Professor Laura K. Taylor

Laura K. Taylor is an Associate Professor at the UCD School of Psychology whose research examines how children and young people develop resilience and social identities in contexts of long-running conflict. Using an intergroup developmental approach, her work explores how experiences of conflict shape behaviours such as aggression and cooperation, as well as wider processes including shared education and relationships between groups. She is Principal Investigator of the Helping Kids! Lab and has been awarded a €2 million European Research Council Consolidator Grant for her GENERATION EU project, which investigates how young people develop a sense of European identity and what this means for social cohesion and peace.

Dr Boróka Bó is an Assistant Professor at UCD School of Sociology, whose research examines how sociotemporal inequalities shape wellbeing and lived experience. Her work explores how socioeconomic, cultural and demographic factors influence access to time, how class shapes the emotional experience of time, and how communities navigating environmental hazards understand and cope with being “out of time.” She currently leads two funded research projects: an Enterprise Ireland–supported study on the sociotemporal determinants of senior climate entrepreneurship, and a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research–funded project that brings together a multidisciplinary team across four continents to examine how venture investors shape the gendered trajectory of AI innovation.

Associate Professor Aideen Quilty, of the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, is an interdisciplinary researcher whose work spans adult education, gender and queer studies, and human geography. Her research focuses on widening participation and educational inclusion in higher education, examined through spatial theory, critical pedagogy and queer and feminist perspectives, with recent work exploring spatial ecologies and pedagogic imaginaries within universities. She has served as Principal Investigator on a European Union funded DAPHNE programme exploring young LGBTQI+ people’s empowerment in combating homophobic and transphobic violence, and as co-PI on the first national qualitative study of LGBTQI+ youth homelessness in Ireland.

Assoc Professor Barry Molloy

Associate Professor Barry Molloy, of the UCD School of Archaeology, is a specialist in European and Mediterranean prehistory, with a particular focus on the second to early first millennia BC. He has conducted extensive fieldwork and museum-based research across Europe, including in Albania, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and the United Kingdom. He currently leads the ERC-funded project The Fall of 1200 BC, which investigates crisis-driven societal change in southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the Bronze Age. The project explores themes including migration and mobility, conflict and warfare, craft responses and climate change between the 14th and 11th centuries BC.

Dr Nora Strecker, of the UCD School of Economics, is an economist whose research focuses on public finance, particularly personal income taxation, at the intersection of international trade, welfare economics and political economy. Her work examines how income taxation shapes global inequality and economic growth, as well as the transition from tariff-based to tax-based economies, building on earlier research into the effects of globalisation on tax burdens and firms’ location decisions. She has published in leading international journals including the American Economic Review, the Journal of International Economics and International Tax and Public Finance, and is actively engaged in international policy and research networks across public economics and international trade.

Associate Professor Seaneen Sloan, of the UCD School of Education, is Deputy Head of School and an interdisciplinary researcher whose work bridges health, social sciences and educational research. Her teaching and research focus on child and young people’s wellbeing, research methods and data analysis, and over the past two decades she has been driven by a strong commitment to producing robust, policy-relevant evidence that improves outcomes for children and young people. She has played a key role in securing more than €13 million in research funding, contributing to major longitudinal studies, intervention evaluations, and research supporting vulnerable and marginalised groups.
