AI, Data Science & Society

This research theme examines how artificial intelligence and data science shape society, and how values can be embedded in technological design and innovation. It explores the social, ethical, legal and political implications of digital technologies, focusing on issues such as power, governance, inclusion and accountability. The research advances understanding of how values-led approaches to AI and data-driven innovation can support fair, responsible and socially beneficial outcomes.

Led by Dr Elizabeth Farries of the UCD Centre for Digital Policy, FORSEE explores what it means for artificial intelligence to be successful for society, not just technologically or economically. The project examines AI’s long-term impacts on areas such as sustainability, labour, gender and civic engagement to support more responsible and human-centred approaches to AI.

VIGILANT: Vital Intelligence to Investigate Illegal Disinformation

Led by Dr Brendan Spillane of the UCD School of Information and Communication Studies, VIGILANT examines how online disinformation drives harmful activity and undermines social cohesion and democracy. The project develops ethical, advanced tools to help identify and analyse disinformation and support more effective responses to its real-world impacts.

DIVERSIFAIR

DIVERSIFAIR is a collaborative research project focused on promoting fairness and inclusion in the development of artificial intelligence. With active involvement from the UCD School of Information and Communication Studies, including researchers such as Dr Susan Leavy and Dr Courtney Ford, the project examines how intersectional bias can be identified and addressed in AI systems to support more equitable and inclusive AI design.
