Liam Alfred - Finance Transformation Business Analyst

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Liam Alfred, and I joined UCD in September 2023, after moving to Dublin from New York. With family rooted in Dublin, the opportunity to live and work in Ireland was both desirable and one I have always aspired to make. Studying Accountancy at the University of Connecticut, I began my career in audit with a public accounting firm, focused in the not for profit sector. Following my time in audit, I spent the last two years working with New York University Langone Health’s Endowment and Restricted Fund Finance team. I also serve as the Controller on the Board of Director for an animal welfare organization based in Tanzania, Meru Animal Welfare Organization. I am very excited to work on and be a part of such an impactful project at UCD.

What project are you working on? Tell us a little bit about it

Working on the Finance Programme for Operations and Services Transformation (FinPOST) has given me great exposure to the University. This programme is centred on transforming finance in UCD and creating a better experience for the community through the change of finance services, processes, and systems. The goal of the programme is to remove obstacles for our staff and create an enhanced experience for everyone. The selection of Workday shows UCD’s commitment to innovation and impact.

What is your role on the project? What element are you working on?

As a business analyst on this transformation project, I aim to play a critical role in understanding and documenting the current financial processes, identifying areas for enhancement, and collaborating with our community, ultimately hoping to align the organizational goals and compliance with applicable requirements. With FinPOST, I work within the Project and Asset Management workstream, with an objective to transform the way Finance and the University research programmes work together cohesively. This is a very unique part of our overall project, as we work with projects funded by  Ireland’s leading research agencies in conjunction with UCD’s top talent in research.

What do you enjoy most about working on this project?

Spending time on campus and getting a feel for the environment and its culture has been a great welcome to Ireland, and UCD specifically. Although I work on  a specific workstream of the project, there are many reminders of how vast the institution is and the range of work the different corners of the University produce. FinPOST has a great blend of both those who have spent their careers at UCD, and those who have come in externally, creating a fantastic blend of experience and opportunity to learn from each other. Having insight to the goals we have set for the project, I am very enthusiastic to have the community begin to see the vision come to fruition.
