Contributing to the Growing Body of Best Evidence Practice in Health Profession Education
Staff in the UCD Veterinary Nursing Section are involved in educational, animal behaviour and welfare, and parasitology research. The Veterinary Nursing Section is engaged in collaborative educational research work with UCD colleagues in other health professional Schools, as well as the UCD School of Engineering, to promote and support evidence-informed veterinary and veterinary nursing education through innovation and educational research. Many of our projects also include collaboration with other veterinary schools internationally.
Current projects include inter-professional education, veterinary clinical skills model development and validation and assessment of student’s clinical skills using digital assessment. Niamh O’Donoghue has been recognised both nationally (University-level Teaching Excellence Award) and internationally (VetEd best poster) for her achievements within educational research.
In addition to funded structured collaborative educational research, the diverse Veterinary Nursing section engage in committee work, undertake a variety of relevant professional teaching and research certification, produce publications and supervise summer student research projects. These are essential to open doors for future development of clinical and other areas of research, alongside an already established educational research thread, within the Section. So far, summer student projects have included topics on animal behaviour and parasitology. Both have led and are leading to further publication and collaboration in the respective areas.
Assistant Professor Robin Farrell, Director of Veterinary Nursing, also serves on the advisory board for the (opens in a new window)International Veterinary Simulation in Teaching (InVeST) group. InVeST provides support for the use of simulation in Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing Education through annual conferences and online forums to facilitate international collaborations and dissemination of research and development project outcomes.
Our collective focus, as a section, revolves around best practice and instilling and developing a conscience as the patient advocate in our respective research interest areas.
