Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 2022

Vet Nurses at work in the UCD Veterinary HospitalMay is an important month in the veterinary community as we take time to reflect on the hard work and dedication of the Veterinary Nursing profession. Veterinary Nursing is a relatively young profession in Ireland. UCD first opened a part-time Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipVN) in 2001. Ireland introduced a new Veterinary Practice Act in 2005 that protects the title and acts of Veterinary Nursing, which saw it become a statutory, registered profession under the law. The Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) is responsible for the registration of Veterinary Nurses and the accreditation of Veterinary Nursing education programmes.

In a short space of time, Veterinary Nursing education advanced to a degree programme and by 2013, UCD had our first graduates from our BSc (VN) honours programme. This month, the School of Veterinary Medicine will be raising awareness of the Veterinary Nursing profession through highlighting the work of faculty, students and the many talented nurses that work in the UCD Veterinary Hospital. Keep an eye on our social media for more information over the course of the month.
