Modern Irish

The BA programme in Modern Irish is aimed at students with an interest in the language, literature, heritage and history of Modern Irish from the beginning of the Modern Irish period to the present day. Students will graduate with an in-depth knowledge in all of these areas, developing effective communication and analytical skills to prepare them for a variety of career paths including: careers in education, media, translation, the public service, research, editing and publishing.

Our aim is to promote and preserve the Irish language, its literature and culture, and to emphasise their importance for Irish society. We value autonomous and collaborative learning by providing a vibrant academic environment for the teaching and use of the Irish language, supported by our multi-media language learning centre, field trips to the Gaeltacht and our Student Space (An Seomra Caidrimh), and we encourage Irish-language usage amongst the student body. All teaching and communication is conducted through the medium of Irish, both in small group tutorials and in large group lectures.

Assessment takes the form of oral, written and aural examinations, peer assessment, project work, essays and presentations in the delivery of the curriculum.
