Borrowing books 

All registered UCD students are entitled to use and borrow books from the libraries. UCD has 5 main libraries: James Joyce Library; Richview Library; Blackrock Library; Health Sciences Library; and Veterinary Library.

Library tours

Library tours are available at the beginning of each academic year and staff are available at the information desks to help students with queries. For more information visit the UCD Library website.

Campus Bookshop

Buying new books

The Campus Bookshop sells a wide variety of prescribed texts. Only new books are sold here. 

Second hand books on campus 

The Education Office of the Students’ Union is responsible for the running of the Second-Hand Bookshop. The bookshop is located on the ground floor of the Student Centre. Second-hand books can be bought and sold here. Visit the Second Hand Bookshop website for further information.

Computing services

UCD Email account 

At the beginning of your studies you will be issued with a UCD student email account.

SUAS Computers

All students have access to high speed internet, computers and an email account. Look out for Stand Up and Surf PCs (SUAS) dotted around campus. They are Skype enabled and also give you access to email and the internet.


WIFI on campus 

You will find many laptop areas offering easy access to the wired and wireless network. All the main campus buildings are wireless enabled. Before using the network, laptops must be registered with IT Services, located in the Daedalus Building (Belfield). Note that laptop loans are available from the IT Centres.

UCD IT Services- Getting Started

Throughout Orientation week UCD IT Services provide free 20 minute student IT Induction courses from the Daedalus building.

IT Induction courses are designed to familiarise the new UCD student with all they need to know about:

  • How to get help
  • Accessing the UCD network and using your computer account
  • Using the IT Services computer labs 
  • Accessing software applications
  • Using UCD Connect
  • eLearning
  • Laptop services at UCD
  • UCD Mobile app

Printing on campus

You can print to a printer in a computer lab. You must pay to top up your printing credit on your student card (UCARD). To buy credit, go to a print top up machine (Daedalus Building, Ground Floor, outside G6; James Joyce Library, 1st Floor; Health Science Centre, Ground Floor, B006; Roebuck Building, adjacent Common Room) and follow instructions. 


This is a printing and photocopying service located in the Newman Building, Quinn School and Blackrock campus.


Restaurants on Belfield and Blackrock campuses

There are a number of restaurants and cafes on the Belfield and Blackrock campuses open Monday to Friday during the academic year. The main restaurant is located on the first floor of the Gerard Manley Hopkins Centre. Further information is available on the UCD Places to Eat website.

Buildings and Services

Lost property

If you have lost anything always report it to UCD Services as it may have been handed in. If you find anything around campus, please bring it to the Campus Services Desk located at the lower ground level in the UCD Agriculture and Food Science Building, or Blackrock Services Desk. 

Post Office

A post office is located to the rear of the ground floor of the Gerard Manley Hopkins Centre. All regular post office services are available and a post-box is situated outside the post office as well as near the Library Building.

Bank Services

Opening a bank account

Students are advised to open a bank account in Dublin as soon as possible after arrival. There is a branch of Allied Irish Banks (AIB) on campus and a branch of Bank of Ireland located opposite the main entrance. ATM’s are located at the Library Building, at Gerard Manley Hopkins Centre, AIB bank, and the Student Centre at the Belfield Campus.  There is also an ATM located on the Blackrock campus.

To open a bank account you will need:

  • Passport
  • UCD student card
  • Proof of address (You can print this from their SIS Web account).

UCD Sport and Fitness

Swimming Pool, cinema, debating chamber, dance studio, drama theatre, sauna, jacuzzi, outdoor pitches

The UCD Student Centre and UCD Sport & Fitness are at the heart of student life in UCD. The recently completed extension provides you with the most diverse student facility in Ireland.

In the Student Centre, you can spend time in the state of the art 3D cinema where we will be screening the latest blockbusters and classic films. If you prefer, why not attend any number of great events in the new drama theatre or debating chamber. Within the Student Centre you can also find a 600-seat auditorium, meeting rooms, a new TV Studio, Radio Pod, Seminar Room, a medical centre, pharmacy, barbers, newsagents and a host of great places to eat or just chill out. There is also the UCD Club House bar, where you can meet friends to have a chat or relax and watch some sport on the big screens. 

The newly completed extension also houses a number of top class sporting facilities, including: an Olympic sized swimming pool; a brand new gym; as well as dance and spinning studios.  After your workout you can even wind down in the sauna or the jacuzzi. All of these facilities are available for you to enjoy throughout the year. Further information is available on the Student Centre website.

UCD sporting facilities are among the best in the country and reflect the popularity and significance of sporting activity in the university. This is evident in the wide range of both indoor and outdoor facilities available.

  • Sand Based Hockey pitch (Also divided into 7-a-side soccer pitches)

  • 17 natural grass pitches, including the UCD Bowl. The UCD Bowl is home ground to both UCD RFC and UCD AFC.

Use of UCD’s sports facilities (excluding the natural grass pitches) is open to all students, staff, graduates and members of the public. Booking is easy, just drop into the Sports Centre reception. Bicycle Shop

New and second hand bikes 

The Belfield Bike Shop, situated at Belfield House, sells new and second-hand bicycles, cycling accessories, and offers a bicycle repair service. Bicycles are also available for hire.
