A Message from the Head of the School

UCD Philosophy was ranked among the top 100 departments of Philosophy worldwide according to the recent (opens in a new window)QS World Rankings survey (2017, 2018 and 2023).

We are the largest teaching and research centre for Philosophy in Ireland.

We are unique in the broad range of research and teaching interests we offer. Our areas of expertise include Contemporary European (Continental) Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, Political Philosophy and Cognitive Science. Our members of staff have published widely in the history of philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and are prominent in international academic circles. We also offer a friendly and open atmosphere where students and staff regularly interact and exchange ideas in discussion groups and coffee mornings.

A highly ranked periodical, (opens in a new window)The International Journal of Philosophical Studies, is edited from the School and we also publish a peer-reviewed graduate philosophy journal, (opens in a new window)Perspectives. The School of Philosophy is also part of (opens in a new window)Irish Philosophical Society. We have also been successful in attracting national and international research funding, including (opens in a new window)Irish Research Council postgraduate and postdoctoral fellowships.

Our size and our range of diverse interests provide an exciting learning experience for undergraduates and graduates. Indeed, UCD School of Philosophy is known for its vibrant intellectual atmosphere. We hold numerous international conferences and workshops, figures such as Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam, Judith Butler, John McDowell, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor and J├╝rgen Habermas have been regular visitors to the School.

Many of our former students hold academic positions in Ireland, UK and USA. Others are prominent playwrights, journalists, human rights activists, broadcasters, film-makers and musicians.

Please see our individual staff web pages for further details. You can also join the (opens in a new window)UCD School of Philosophy Facebook page or browse our webpage for further information about the School and the many academic events we organise.
