Ajiaco, Rum and Coffee: Food and Identity in Leonardo Padura’s Detective Fiction
A new edited collection entitled "Blood on the Table: Essays on Food in International Crime Fiction" has just been published with McFarland Books. It contains a chapter written by Dr Diana Battaglia titled Ajiaco, Rum and Coffee: Food and Identity in Leonardo Padura’s Detective Fiction.
'This is the first book to focus explicitly on the semiotics of food in crime fiction. Tackling the subject from a multicultural and interdisciplinary perspective, it includes approaches from cultural studies, food studies, media studies and crime fiction studies. The collection offers readings, across a range of media, of twentieth- and twenty-first-century crime fiction from Australia, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, the UK, and the US. Authors studied include Anthony Bourdain, Arthur Upfield, Sara Paretsky, Andrea Camilleri, Fred Vargas, Ruth Rendell, Stieg Larsson, Leonardo Padura, Georges Simenon, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, and Donna Leon. Television productions analyzed here include the Inspector Montalbano series (1999-ongoing), the Danish-Swedish Bron/Broen (2011[The Bridge]), and its remakes The Tunnel (2013, France/UK) and The Bridge (2013, USA).'

Our finalists of the writeAUT Literature Competition 2018 had the pleasure to attend the award ceremony in the Austrian Cultural Forum London on the 20th of April. It was a sunny day filled with creative vibes, intellectual achievements and the joy of browsing through literature, film and music prizes, which were handed over to the finalists of German studies students from Ireland, Scotland and England. German: Made in Austria
The event 'German: Made in Austria' took place on Wednesday, 28th of March at 5pm and was organised and presented by our OEAD Lektorin Anneliese Rieger. Students at the event discussed the differences between Austrian/German, Swiss/German and German/German as well as how to effectively use a monolingual German dictionary.
Presentations on Switzerland and Austrian idioms were given by Dr Siobhán Donovan and Prof Herbert Herzmann (Emeritus, Senior Lecturer in German at UCD).

Knowledge across Boundaries: Women, Translation, and Scholarship in Italy’s Long Eighteenth Century
A lecture by Helena Sanson Reader in Italian Language, Literature and Culture at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Clare College Against the background of Italy’s multilingual and multicultural context, this lecture investigates the role of women translators in the circulation of ideas and the dissemination of knowledge in the long Eighteenth century. Engaging in translation has at times been deemed a less threatening way for women to contribute to an otherwise hostile literary environment, a compromise between their artistic aspirations and the perils involved with authorship of imaginative literature. Research on the topic shows, however, that this understanding of the role of translation for women is limiting: far from being an ancillary activity, Italian women of letters often devoted themselves to translation as a means of expressing their scholarship, erudition, or civil engagement.

SLCL welcomes Professor Jane Koustas, M. Flaherty Visiting Professor
French and Francophone Studies, SLCL is delighted to host Professor Jane Koustas from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario. Professor Koustas currently holds the James M. Flaherty Visiting Professorship through the Ireland Canada University Foundation. This is a “a premiere international exchange programme commemorating Canada’s former Minister for Finance, and great friend of Ireland, James M. Flaherty”. The programme funds two Canadian and two Irish visiting professors to pursue research, to develop networks, and to promote collaboration between the two countries.
Professor Koustas’ research project entitled “Contemporary Quebec and Irish Theatre: National Identity and Global Reach” examines the global trajectory, success, impact, and focus of contemporary Irish and Quebec theatre, tracing their growth from nationalistically motivated drama to global theatre in which identity, citizenship and belonging are fluid concepts. The study engages a reconsideration of the nation/performance relationship in both contexts. Professor Koustas considers primarily, though not exclusively, the globalisation of Frank McGuinness and Marina Carr (Ireland) and Larry Tremblay and Carole Fréchette (Quebec) whose work, while anchored in the national context, rejects or defies the nationalist label.

Workshop: "Aligning university languages assessments with the Common European Framework of Reference for the Languages (CEFR): a quality assurance approach".
Maynooth University, Friday 8 June 2018, 9.30-17.00 (exact location on campus TBC)
This workshop, jointly organised by SLCL and the Department of Modern Irish in Maynooth, is targeted at those teaching and assessing languages at higher-education institutions in Ireland who would like guidance on how to apply the CEFR and ensure quality language assessment in their contexts. It will consist of keynote talks by leading experts on the CEFR, Dr Enrica Piccardo and Dr Brian North; a hands-on workshop using the newly developed online tool for self-evaluation of CEFR-related teaching and assessment; presentations on best practice in assessment in Irish higher-level institutions, and a roundtable, including a discussion of the implications of the recently published Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education, 2017-2026. Book Launch: Italian Women's Autobiographical Writings in the Twentieth Century

The volume will be presented by Prof. Sharon Wood, Professor Emerita of Italian at the University of Leicester who has published widely in the areas of modern Italian fiction and theatre, and is especially interested in women's writing.

CONFERENCE: Baudelaire’s Afterlives: Immortality and its Discontents
One-Day Symposium at National University of Ireland, 49 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 organized by UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics on 15th December 2017
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Baudelaire, who remains one of the most celebrated French writers of the nineteenth century. It is far from clear what Baudelaire himself might have made of his posthumous reputations as poet, critic, translator and theorist of modernity. In campaigning for a seat in the Académie française, he apparently aspired to join its community of literary ‘Immortals’, yet he was also haunted by the intolerable prospect that spleen and ennui might pursue him beyond the grave. In Baudelaire’s mind, there was a risk that immortality might take the form not of the reassuring recognition of posterity, but rather that of the restlessness of the undead. Read more ->

Constructing the Equality of the Sexes in Seventeenth-Century France
An international conference entitled 'Constructing the Equality of the Sexes in Seventeenth-Century France' was organised by Dr Derval Conroy, Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies, on 25-26th October in the NUI, Merrion Square. The aim of the conference, which brought together speakers from Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and the US, was primarily to examine the role of the ideas of seventeenth-century France in the development of the philosophical and political underpinnings of what we now call gender equality.

Congratulations to our NUI award-winners for their recent wonderful successes within the Dr H H Stewart Literary Scholarships and Prizes programme, awards based on the results of the First Arts exams nationally, across all the NUI constituent universities.
The recipients were Clíona nic Lochlainn (awarded both the Scholarship in Italian, and a commendation in French); Aine Burns (awarded Second Prize in German); and Mairead O'Driscoll (awarded Third Prize in Italian).

CONFERENCE: Constructing the equality of the sexes in the early modern period
International Conference, 25th-26th October 2017, NUI
The concept of equality as an intellectual category, and a realizable aim for humanity, remains for many scholars today associated with the eighteenth century. Yet in recent decades, historians of ideas have increasingly acknowledged the role of the seventeenth century in the evolution of egalitarian ideas, despite the dominant mindset of hierarchy and binarism prevalent at the time. The aim of this conference is to examine the ways in which an equality between the sexes is constructed, conceptualised, envisaged, imagined, dramatized, realized or dismissed in early modern France, whilst allowing for the concomitant ambiguities and limitations inevitable within the paradigms of the period. EVENT: Chinese - Just Another Modern Foreign Language? - Wednesday, 11th October 2017, 1pm
In this talk Gerda Wielander, Head of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Westminster and Associate Professor in Chinese Studies, will address the following questions. Can Chinese be integrated into a standard MFL programme? Is it reasonable to expect similar levels of attainment in European languages and Chinese after three or four years of study? What role can Chinese play in the Modern Languages sector, and what are the main challenges for the sector more widely over the next few years and what role can Chinese play in raising the profile of Languages more widely? The speaker will draw on her work at the University of Westminster, her involvement with the British Association for Chinese Studies, and her previous role at University Council for Modern Languages to answer these questions. She will also present the curriculum structure at Westminster as one example of how the study of European and non-European languages can be successfully integrated.

PUBLICATION: Italian Women's Autobiographical Writings in the Twentieth Century: Constructing Subjects by Assoc Prof Ursula Fanning
This book highlights the centrality of the autobiographical enterprise to Italian women’s writing through the twentieth century—a century that has frequently been referred to as the century of the self. Ursula Fanning addresses the thorny issue of essentialism potentially involved in underlining links between women’s writing and autobiographical modes, and ultimately rejects it in favor of an argument based on the cultural, linguistic, and literary marginalization of women writers within the Italian context.

On Wednesday we will be showing Widows on Thursdays in Theatre O (Newman Building) at 6pm and on Thursday we will be showing Cassandra at 6pm in the same place. The Thursday film will be preceded by a wine reception at 5pm in A318 (not A108). We are delighted to be welcoming H.E. Dr. Laura Bernal, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, to the wine reception.

Congratulations to Aoife Ní Chroidheain (Graduate - BA International Modern Languages)
We would like to congratulate Aoife Ní Chroidheain who has been highly commended in the (opens in a new window)2017 Undergraduate Awards as one of 15 students in the Language and Linguistics category. The other students in the category are from all over the world, including Australia, US, Hong Kong, UK and Israel. Aoife graduated in September 2017 with a degree in Modern Languages and is off to Oxford to start an MA in German this September.
We wish her all the best for her future academic endeavours.

The UCD Foundation for Italian Studies was delighted to host Prof. Paolo Galluzzi, Director of the Museo Galileo in Florence, who gave a stimulating, informative and visually fascinating talk on 'Machinae Pictae: Idea and Image of the Machine in Renaissance Italy' on Wednesday September 20th 2017. Undergraduate prize in the annual Society for Pirandello Studies essay competition
Ms Helen Grixti, Major in Italian Studies and Art History, has won the undergraduate prize in the annual Society for Pirandello Studies essay competition, with an essay on the most important stylistic feature in the Modernist novel, referencing the work of Luigi Pirandello and Federigo Tozzi. The essay was originally part of the coursework for ITAL 30020 on Italian Modernist Fiction, convened by Dr Ursula Fanning in Italian Studies. Helen's essay will be published in the next issue of the journal Pirandello Studies.

The Helga and Hugh Staunton Scholarship (German) - Applications now open
The Helga and Hugh Staunton Scholarship was launched in 2004. The scholarship is valued at up to EUR5000 per annum and is awarded to a registered postgraduate student of proven academic excellence who wishes to pursue postgraduate studies in German at UCD. Applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in German will also be considered. Read more->
