Dr Anna Visser, Head of Research and Evaluation, Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Professor Michelle Norris, Director Geary Institute, Professor Dympna Devine, College VP for Research, Impact & Innovation, Professor Oonagh Breen UCD Sutherland School of Law, Professor Colin Scott, College Principal, College of Social Sciences and Law.

A Covid 19 Showcase organised by UCD College of Social Sciences and Law in association with the Geary Institute took place on April 6th in UCD Sutherland School of Law. The showcase event explored key questions about the wider societal impact of the pandemic, both now and into the future, as researched and examined by researchers from a variety of disciplines across UCD College of Social Sciences & Law.

As we emerge from the Covid 19 pandemic, when concerns over health predominated public discourse and policy, it is timely to consider the pandemic more broadly and how it has impacted upon, and will continue to impact upon, the everyday lives of citizens. Beyond Covid 19, there is a need for evidence-based insights into the many societal challenges that have arisen as a result of the pandemic. The seminar considered how the social organisation of our lives – at work, in our homes, communities and schools was altered, alongside the capacities of different members of society to adjust, adapt, respond to the changed circumstances. Eighteen research projects representing research in most of the Schools within the College of Social Sciences and Law were presented across three inter-disciplinary themes related to: Public Trust, Misinformation and Ethics; Equalities and Social Justice, and Health and Wellbeing.

Dr Anna Visser, Head of Research and Evaluation from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth gave the keynote address. The event was very well attended, attracted considerable interest, and gave rise to lively discussion and debate, showcasing key examples of social scientific research into the societal impact of the pandemic both in Ireland as well as abroad.
