Friday, 26 August, 2016

In the picture, Dr. Ken Gavin (UCD), Prof Mark Ferguson (SFI), Minister Sean Sherlock, Prof Tony Lewis (UCC), and Prof. Alistair Borthwick (university of Edinburgh) at the MaREI Launch.

Ken Gavin's group will be examining novel foundations systems for offshore wind in association with their industry partners Mainstream Renewable Power and UCC. This work will include numerical analysis and physical tests of anchor systems for floating wind turbines and large-scale demonstration tests on drilled pile foundations.

In addition at UCD Prof. Frederic Dias from the School of Mathematical Sciences is carrying out world leading research aimed at the development of analytical models of the efficiency of wave energy devices. Prof. Chris Bean from the School of Geological Sciences in developing methods for measuring offshore waves using land based seismological stations, while surface treatment of the marine composites and related parts using atmospheric plasma's is being carried out by Dr. Denis Dowling, within the School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering.
