Second BDIC Conference on Computer Science and Electrical/Electronics Engineering

The second BDIC Conference on Computer Science and Electrical/Electronics Engineering took place on 26 November 2025 at Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) in Beijing, China, organised by the UCD Network Automation and Intelligence Lab ((opens in a new window)https://nia.ucd.ie/). The event brought together researchers, academics, and industry professionals from across both institutions, creating a space to learn about new developments, exchange ideas, and explore emerging work in Computer Science and Electrical/Electronics Engineering.

This year’s conference was noticeably larger and more active than the previous one. The number of accepted posters rose from 15 in 2024 to 24 in 2025, reflecting a 60 percent increase, and undergraduate participation grew from just one contribution last year to five this year. The growth emphasises the increasing research activity within the BDIC community and the enthusiasm of students at all levels.

Across the day, papers and posters were presented by PhD, Masters, and undergraduate researchers, spread across four key themes: Computer Science theory and applications, electrical circuits and systems, electronics and emerging technologies, and a wider interdisciplinary track. Alongside the research sessions, the programme also supported networking between UCD and BJUT researchers, and a China Scholarship Council (CSC) information session encouraged interested students to consider continuing to PhD study at UCD.

The Best Poster Awards for 2025 were selected by the Technical and Awards Committee, consisting of Dr Aidan Murphy, Dr Mohamed Saadeldin, Dr Pasika Ranaweera, Dr Anca Jurcut, and Dr Arjun Pakrashi. Awards were presented in both undergraduate and postgraduate categories.

Award recipients included:
Best Undergraduate Poster: Li Junhao, Automatic inspection robot based on tight coupling of LiDAR and inertial navigation
Best Poster: Yanlei Hu, Battery Degradation-Aware Electric Vehicle Charging Scheduling at Multiple Charging Stations
Best Poster: Eranda Jayatunga, Secure Distributed Overtaking and Lane Change Maneuvers for Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles

The conference was led by Conference Chair Dr Nima Afraz, with Dr Pasika Ranaweera as Co-Chair, while the event opened with welcome remarks from Professor Ailish O’Halloran, Vice-Provost of BDIC.

The Network Intelligence and Automation Lab (NIA) at University College Dublin conducts research in intelligent, autonomous, and data driven network systems. The lab focuses on developing future communication infrastructures that operate adaptively, securely, and efficiently, with core expertise in Open RAN conflict mitigation, autonomous resource sharing for satellite and non terrestrial networks, and blockchain assisted decision automation. NIA collaborates with academic, industry, and government partners, and its work is supported by major national and European research programmes.

NIA contributes to international and national research projects including the National Space Subsystems and Payloads Initiative (NSSPI) project (€7.9M, Enterprise Ireland/DTIF), co-coordinates RE-ROUTE (€671.6K, European Commission), and Data-driven xApps Conflict Management in Open RAN funded by Research Ireland CONNECT Centre.
