UCD School of Computer Science Medal Winners 2024–2025

3rd of September 2025 — Following the BSc Computer Science conferring ceremony, the UCD School of Computer Science proudly celebrated three outstanding students who received the School’s annual medals for exceptional academic achievement.

These awards are a valued post-conferring tradition that recognise excellence and honour members of our community whose contributions continue to inspire students and staff alike.

Celebrating Academic Excellence

The John Kelly Memorial Medal

Recipient: Sergio Jimenez de Santiago
Awarded to the student who achieves First Class Honours and first place in the final year of the BSc (Hons) Computer Science. This medal commemorates Dr John Kelly, who lectured in the Department of Computer Science from 1979 to 1995, in recognition of his exceptional teaching, mentorship, and research leadership.

The Patrick Smyth Medal

Recipient: Hiya Garg

Recognising the student with the highest Stage 3 GPA in the BSc in Computer Science and Computer Science with Data Science, this medal celebrates Hiya Garg’s outstanding academic performance.
It honours Patrick Smyth, a former student remembered for his resilience, positivity, and dedication during serious illness—qualities that continue to inspire the School community.

The Franz Geiselbrechtinger Medal

Recipient: Aimen Taha

Awarded to the student who submits the best Final Year Project on a theoretical topic in Computer Science, earning an A– grade or higher.
This medal honours Dr Franz Geiselbrechtinger (lecturer from 1979–2009), whose passion for formal methods and software design continues to influence UCD’s approach to computer science education.
