The UCD College of Arts and Humanities is home to a community of scholars whose work with digital collections, spaces, and tools has garnered international recognition. The digital humanities research strand brings together researchers working across a wide range of disciplines, methodologies and theoretical perspectives, in order to facilitate dialogue, knowledge-sharing and resource development.

Building on the deep creative heritage of UCD Arts and Humanities, the creative energy of Dublin, and the international cultural reputation of Ireland, Engaged Creativity seeks to develop world-class creative talent, to foster practice-based research, to bring creative approaches to complex research questions and social problems, and to foster impactful engagement with communities.

Environmental Humanities

The interdisciplinary area of environmental humanities brings humanistic modes of inquiry and creative praxis to bear on environmental challenges, with an emphasis on the capacity of cultural critique to illuminate ethical and political questions relating to ecological crises.

Health, Medicine and Wellbeing

As a research community within the College of Arts and Humanities, we explore the social, cultural, historical, geopolitical, and environmental framings of health and medicine, highlighting the intersection of medical policy/practice with categories such as gender, sexuality, race, religion, and ethnicity.

Ireland in the World

Migration is central to the Irish psyche, language, lore, storytelling, literary works, art works and music of the Irish at home and abroad. But engaging with Ireland in the world opens up questions and challenges about a number of contexts, including migration, artistic and literary exchanges, cultural encounters, translation, the relationship between empire, colony, and nation.

Thresholds of Knowledge

Both etymologically and conceptually, the synergy of ‘Thresholds of Knowledge’ with the University's ‘Breaking Boundaries’ strategy is self-evident, and allows for rich and fruitful interdisciplinary exchanges. Our focus on the processes and agents of knowledge-making and authentication are more crucial than ever, as we tackle the ongoing challenge facing the humanities to make sense of the increasingly chaotic world in which we live.

TNH explores methodologies and case studies of transnational processes and practices from historical and contemporary perspectives. The TNH strand fosters an open, free research culture and an inclusive environment for critical debate, analysis and collaboration.

In the College of Arts and Humanities, an interdisciplinary group of scholars study the sources, impacts, representations, commemorations, and legacies of violence. We think about how states, societies, and communities promote, restrain, and regulate violence, from global wars to interpersonal relations.
