I am a trans* student

1. Is UCD College of Arts and Humanities trans-inclusive?

Yes. The College aims to foster a respectful, supportive environment for transgender and gender-diverse students. Staff are encouraged to use chosen names and pronouns, challenge discriminatory behaviour, and uphold UCD’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) values.

2. How do I let my lecturers or tutors know my name and pronouns?

You can share your name and pronouns in whatever way feels comfortable - by email, in person, or on the first day of class. You never have to disclose personal details; simply stating your name and pronouns is enough.

3. What if my official name on UCD systems doesn’t match the name I use?

Names can be changed across UCD systems and on your UCard with NO requirement for a Gender Recognition Certificate. The steps are very simple and not administratively burdensome.

Contact UCD Student Desk and tell them you would like your name changed. They will sensitively guide you through the straightforward process.

3. What should I do if I am misgendered or misnamed in class?

You may correct the lecturer or student directly if you feel comfortable. If not, you can speak to a lecturer privately or send a short email asking them to use your chosen name or pronouns. Staff are expected to correct mistakes (in themselves and others) calmly and move on.

If this persists, you may wish to go to someone else in your School or the College that you feel comfortable with and who can address this with the person on your behalf. You can also report the situation to UCD Dignity & Respect (anonymously if you want) and make an appointment to meet with UCD Dignity & Respect.

5. What if someone makes transphobic or disrespectful comments?

Such behaviour goes against UCD’s values. If it happens, you can notify your lecturer, tutor, programme coordinator, or a staff member you trust and feel comfortable with. Staff are expected to address disrespectful comments and ensure a safe learning environment. You can also report the situation to UCD Dignity & Respect (anonymously if you want) and make an appointment to meet with UCD Dignity & Respect.

You are entitled to a respectful learning environment, and staff can help you navigate the next steps.

6. Are there gender-neutral bathrooms or spaces available?

UCD provides gender-neutral bathroom facilities across campus and has signs stating that individuals should use the bathroom facilities that best align to their gender. The gender-neutral bathrooms in the College of Arts & Humanities are on the lower ground floor opposite NT1 and NT2, using the staircase nearest the coffee dock on the concourse.

7. How does the College protect my privacy?

Your gender identity, chosen name, pronouns, and any information related to transitioning are private. Staff should not share this information without your explicit permission. If you feel your privacy has been breached, you can contact EDI or Student Advisers for support.

8. Who can I talk to if I need personal or academic support?

You can reach out to: a Student Adviser; the UCD EDI Office; Counselling Services; the (opens in a new window)UCD LGBTQ+ Society; your Programme Director or School Office

They can help with academic concerns, discrimination issues, wellbeing, or general advice.

9. Can I access mental health support that is inclusive of gender-diverse students?

Yes. UCD Counselling Services are trained to work with students of all gender identities. You can self-refer and note anything you want your counsellor to be aware of.

10. How can I connect with supportive communities on campus?

Groups like the (opens in a new window)UCD LGBTQ+ Society and campus-wide EDI events are open to all. These can be great places to meet others, find support, and build community.

11. What should I do if I want accommodations during my transition (e.g., absences, deadlines)?

Speak with your Student Adviser or Programme Director. They can help coordinate reasonable flexibility, extensions, or academic support tailored to your situation (always confidentially). You can also apply for extenuating circumstances.
