Ending Research Funded Contracts
In general, research funded contracts end line with the original term of the contract but, on occasion, a contract may need to end prematurely. This page outlines a number of scenarios which may arise and the process to follow.
Contracts ending in line with original term
UCD HR issues monthly notifications to Principal Investigators (PI’s) to keep them up to date on approaching contract end dates. These notifications often follow a reminder from UCD HR as part of the general renewal process.
Principal Investigators should send an 'End Date Notification Form' to email@example.com as soon as possible to confirm that the researchers contract will end as planned. This confirmation should include details of any outstanding holiday payments due.
Contracts ending prematurely
Researchers who intend to resign from their position prior to its end date should follow the steps outlined in the UCD Resignation Policy (summarised below)
- Researchers must submit a ‘letter of resignation’ to their Principal Investigator on the day they verbally give notice. Notice will not be deemed to have commenced until such time as it is offered in writing, as per the terms of UCD’s Contract of Employment.
- The Principal Investigator completes UCD Human Resources’s ‘Employee Resignation Notification Form’. This should be forwarded to HR Operations, HR within a week of the resignation being tendered, along with the original employee resignation letter (or a scanned copy).
- The Principal investigator is responsible for confirming the researchers last day of work, as well as, any agreements they have made in regards to payment in lieu of annual leave not taken before this date. The accepted Notice period and last day of work must comply with UCD’s Contract of Employment.
- If you take up a new contract with another project in UCD then you don't need to submit a resignation letter as you are not leaving employment with UCD.
