Dr Claas Kirchhelle has been awarded a prestigious IRC/AHRC Digital Humanities Initiative award in partnership with Dr Samantha Vanderslott at the Oxford Vaccine Group. 

UCD School of History is delighted to announce that Dr Claas Kirchhelle has been awarded a prestigious IRC/AHRC Digital Humanities Initiative award in partnership with Dr Samantha Vanderslott at the Oxford Vaccine Group. Typhoid, Cockles, and Terrorism is an ambitious digital humanities project on the turbulent history of typhoid control in revolutionary Ireland.

The project builds on the multi-award-winning Typhoidland exhibition. It mixes historical research on bioterrorism allegations and the environmental and (post-)colonial history of typhoid control with cutting-edge spatial analysis to show how Dublin’s public health infrastructure was shaped by the competing interests of the emerging Irish and imperial British states.

Together with Dr Emily Webster, who will join UCD as a Research Associate this autumn, the team will create an open-access database of spatially coded disease, environmental, and infrastructural data and design a blended physical/digital exhibition on Dublin's enteric past with heritage partners at Dublin City Library & Archive and the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.
