New Publication: Fundamentals of the Irish Legal System

Dr Liam Thornton of UCD School of Law has recently co-authored a new Roundhall text,  with (opens in a new window)Dr Tanya Ni Mhuirthile (DCU) and (opens in a new window)Dr Catherine O’Sullivan (UCC). This new student textbook, (opens in a new window)Fundamentals of the Irish Legal System: Law, Policy and Politics, seeks to provide students with a socio-legal introduction to the Irish legal system. The textbook, designed to deepen and enrich students’ knowledge and understanding of the Irish legal system in its societal context. Over 16 chapters, the book delves into the concept of the rule of law, an explanation and analysis of sources of law in Ireland (domestic and international) and actors within the Irish legal system, including judges, solicitors and barristers, as well as the administrative state and access to justice in Ireland. In addition, a dedicated section within the book seeks to build student capacity for legal research, reading law and legal writing and advocacy. Fundamentals of the Irish Legal System explains the intricacies of the Irish legal system in an accessible manner, while also providing analysis and discussion on key areas and controversies.
